PRINTING / ACCURACY
How to Print Graph Paper at the Intended Size
The generator stores millimetre geometry in the SVG. Whether those millimetres appear on paper depends on the printer driver, the paper in the tray, and the scaling option in the print dialog. This site cannot override every printer setting.
- Select the paper format in the generator: US Letter (8.5 × 11 in, 215.9 × 279.4 mm) or A4 (210 × 297 mm).
- Choose portrait or landscape. Orientation swaps the physical width and height; it does not change grid spacing.
- Set the grid spacing. The default square grid is 5 mm.
- Review margins. The default 10 mm inset keeps lines away from the unprintable edge on many printers. Do not claim edge-to-edge printing unless the hardware supports borderless output.
- Open the print dialog with Print Sheet. The printed page contains only the generated sheet—no navigation, no controls, no decorative background.
- Choose the matching physical paper in the printer driver. Printing an A4 layout onto Letter stock (or the reverse) will clip or scale the sheet.
- Use actual-size or 100% scaling where available. Avoid “fit to page,” which shrinks the grid so a ruler will not agree with the labelled spacing.
- Check the printed spacing with a ruler. A 5 mm square grid should have approximately 50 mm across ten cells.
What the ruler should show
Pick a starting line, not the page edge. Count ten cell steps along one axis. On a 5 mm grid those ten steps span 50 mm. On a 2 mm grid, ten cells span 20 mm. A difference of one or two millimetres over ten cells usually means the driver scaled the page, the wrong paper size was selected, or the hardware introduced a small feed error.
Printer scaling, paper handling, and hardware tolerances may affect the final printed result. Gridline Atelier does not guarantee exact physical output on every printer.
Margins and the printable area
Printable width equals page width minus left and right margins. Printable height equals page height minus top and bottom margins. Dashed margin guides in the on-screen preview are omitted from print, SVG, and PNG unless you are looking at the preview overlay. They are a screen aid, not part of the sheet.
Browser print-to-PDF
If you need a PDF, use the browser’s print dialog and choose a PDF printer. That is a browser feature, not a dedicated PDF generator on this site. Keep 100% scaling in that dialog as well.
